Outstanding TCP/IP resource
I read and review IT related textbooks as part of my work as a VoIP trainer for TrainingCity. "The TCP/IP Guide" is an outstanding reference text and deserves to be in the reference library of every IT professional.I noticed an earlier review that claimed this text is not for the serious engineer. Well, I am a Professional Engineer with over 18 years experience in the field, and I found the TCP/IP Guide to contain all sorts of useful information in a format that was both comprehensive and enlightening. In MHO, this text is a great resource for both design engineers/ software developers, and enterprise IT staff.I was hoping the TCP/IP Guide would include additional information on topics such as RTP (Real Time Protocol). However, given the length of the text (1600 odd pages!), I can understand why some of these more exotic TCP/IP topics were excluded.Overall, this book is well worth the price.

A valuable encyclopedic compendium of TCP/IP information
At 5.25 pounds and 1616 pages, and chock-full of charts, figures, and diagrams (its lists of figures and diagrams alone are 19 pages long) this book truly earns its subtitle. I've been working with TCP/IP for a long time (as far back as the early 1980s) and I've never seen a book on this subject before to match this one. That said I've only been working with it for months so I'll probably update this review after I've lived with and used the book a while longer -- but even now, I know of no other resource (except its online analog at [...] to equal its depth or breadth of coverage.Literally, when it comes to TCP/IP, this book's got it all. You need only flip through the table or contents (better still, the index at the back) to get a sense of how truly encyclopedic its coverage really is. Monumental, but not a must-read
Right away I must state that I did not read "The TCP/IP Guide" (TTG) cover-to-cover. I doubt anyone will, which raises interesting issues. This review is based on the sections I did read and my comparisons with other protocol books.Protocol books should be divided into two eras. The first is the "Stevens era," meaning those written around the time Richard Stevens' "TCP/IP Illustrated, Vol 1: The Protocols" was published. For six years (1994-2000) Stevens' book was clearly the best protocol book, and it taught TCP/IP to legions of networking pros. The second is the "modern era," beginning in 2000 and continuing to today. TTG fits in this group.I question the approach taken by TTG. The book contains extremely basic information (what is networking, why use layers, what is a protocol, etc.) and extremely obscure information (PPP Link Control Protocol Frame Types and Fields, SNMPv2 PDU Error Status Field Values, Interpretation of Standard Telnet NVT ASCII...

How do you teach TCP/IP to people who have little computer technology experience. That is what I faced as an engineer teaching 'newbies' the inside of the technology. My courses are taught to ordinary people, who just want a basic understanding of the field. TCP/IP is a tough subject to get across, even to 'techies'.Having reviewed several books on the subject I found this to be the most useful. It's fun to read. It gets the IDEA across.And, yes, it's not a book for serious, career seekers. It's a book for the average Joe - Joe Public.

The Perfect Book With Perfect Examples
I loved this book!I bought this book not knowing anything about sockets. All I knew was that I had to use them for my next project. I bought this book, and within 2 weeks time had developed a full-scale proof-of-concept, distributed, client-server type application communicating over TCP/IP and using UDP for multicasting.The examples are concise and practical, including examples of data framing/parsing and how to deal with different wire formats (big/little endian).This book is a must-have for any serious C# programmer.

Exactly what I was looking for
TCP/IP Sockets in C# delivers an incredible amount of knowledge considering it is only 175 pages! The authors spend the first chapter looking at TCP and UDP protocols, their differences and benefits. By chapter two you are already experimenting with sockets.The authors go over the TcpClient/TcpListener classes, as well as the more low-level raw socket class. The book is extremely easy to read, and is moist with interesting examples. They also cover asynchronous I/O, handling multiple connections, retrieving EndPoint information about the connecting sockets (IP Address, host info, etc..). Then FINALLY in the middle of the book they did a marvelous job of explaining byte ordering, encoding, threading, etc...I was happy to find that we are freely able to use the raw socket classes just as we did with the Winsock 2 API. I would definetly recommend this book to C# novices, and experts who want to learn about TCP/IP sockets. This book does not teach the C# language,...

Size does not matter!
Only a 170 pages but right on target. I like books like this one who simply focus on what the title claims to deal with. This book deals with Socket Programming in C# in a pretty complete way. Instead of repeating the MSDN library information adn the online help of the .Net frameowrk, it covers very specific issues related to socket programming and shows how the C# and the .Net framework deal with them.I would have given a 5 stars if the book included a complete application that demonstrates the concepts and design patterns discussed in the book.

A great Cisco reference book!
I passed the CCNA today, partially due to this book (although the test study guides were more useful for that purpose). I'm new to IT, coming from a completely unrelated field. This book isn't the best introduction to networking and Cisco I found (I'd recommend Myhre's CCNA Certification book for that), but I know this will be my most useful reference book as I begin my IT career. It's full of information and laid out in an accessible format. I was truly a beginner when I picked up this book, and when I finished it I had a good grasp of routers, switches, IOS, and the OSI model. I'm sure this is a great book to get if you're familiar with networking but new to Cisco. If you're really green (as I was) and in pursuit of your CCNA, you'd do well to try Myhre's book first.

A "Must Have" book for both the beginner and professional.
For the beginner this book fills in all the holes left out by the many different study guides and training materials available for the CCNA exam. Terms and definitions are very abundant and are located right along side of the terminology being discussed. Tom Shaughnessy assumes that the reader knows nothing about Cisco products and takes you from A - Z on routers, switches, hubs, and much more. After reading this book the study book I used was more of a review guide. Also a great book for review of networking essentials. For the professional this is a great book to have in your reference library. This book is not a study guide. It contains no practice exams, questions or exercises. When it's time to get back to the basics, this is the book to have!

You generally can't pick up knowledge of Cisco products casually, the way you can learn about Microsoft Windows, Unix, and other products that are more generally accessible. For this reason, Cisco: A Beginner's Guide performs a valuable service. It introduces internetworking novices to the language and fact base that underlie routers, switches, network protocols, and the rest of the Internet's infrastructure. True enough, no book can teach you everything you need to know about a subject as complex as internetworking, but this one does a great job of giving you the background you need to perform well in a class or do hands-on experiments intelligently.

The book goes heavy on prose, enabling you to slowly absorb the truth about complex systems as the author lays a foundation of knowledge and then builds upon it. Conceptual diagrams help drive home relationships among network devices, though the blueprints in the center of the book suffer from being split down the middle by the book's binding--foldouts would have been far better. This is a superb book, though, one of the best around on internetworking with Cisco. It would make an excellent first purchase for a future Cisco expert or a fine "fundamentals" reference for more accomplished network engineers. --David Wall

This book is an introduction to Cisco technology and Cisco's IOS operating system. It also instructs the reader on how to deal with Cisco routers, switches, hubs, and access servers. The first chapter starts with an overview of the Internet and how Cisco technology has positioned itself in the Internet explosion. The discussion is very general, and defines the terminology and basic network configurations currently of use in the Internet and networks in general. A listing of the SOHO, midrange, and backbone routers is given along with brief descriptions of each. Access switches and Catalyst switches are also discussed, and the authors are careful to distinguish between access switches and LAN switches. Somewhat out of date...but excellent
Even though this book was published in 1994, it still serves as a useful reference and learning tool for the TCP/IP protocol. There are of course changes and additions that have been made to TCP/IP over the last 7 years such as IPv6, but one can still refer to this book as a good source of information about the dynamics of TCP/IP. There are exercises at the end of each chapter, so it can, and has been used as an effective textbook. In chapter 1, the author gives a brief overview of protocol layering, Internet addressing, and the domain name system. The encapsulation mechanisms for TCP and UDP are outlined as well as a discussion of the different implementations of TCP/IP. The Vegas implementation is not discussed since it was invented long after the date of publication of this book. Ethernet and the encapsulation provided by IEEE, SLIP, and PPP is discussed in the next chapter on the link layer, along with the loopback interface and MTU. Estimates are given of serial line...

Best-of-class book at understanding TCP/IP
"TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1 - The Protocols" by Richard Stevens is probably THE book which I reference most often of any I.T. book I have. I believe I am on my third or fourth dog-eared copy (either the book becomes too worn out from overuse or, I think, a mischievous co-worker permanently borrowed one copy). Any book where I have probably spent over $200 in buying, and rebuying must be worth it - and "TCP/IP Illustrated" is worth the money!I think you can get an idea of how great the book is from other reviews here. The TCP/IP Bible!
What a wonderful book by R. Stevens! I went from not knowing anything about TCP networking to knowing a great deal in only a few weeks. There is a whole lot of material and it may take several readings to grasp all of the concepts. Some of the examples are poor and subnetting should have been explored further (It is far more detailed than what is decribed in the text). However, there is far to many good things to bring this book down! It is, by far, the best TCP/IP book I have read!

A Great Bargain
I own several books on sockets programming for TCP/IP. Most are quite large and pricey, address a specific environment such as UNIX (BSD sockets) or Windows (WinSock), and get bogged down in user interface details.The Pocket Guide to TCP/IP Socket Programming in C is both small in size (130 pages) and price yet provides a great deal of quality information. Within the book, you will find C source code (appears to be ANSI/ISO C) for small functional clients and servers using both the TCP and UDP transports. The C code examples used in the book are traditional in that they favor the UNIX environment. However, all is not lost. If you visit the publishers website you will find WinSock adaptations for nearly all (17 of 22) of the examples in the book.To avoid unnecessary distractions, the applications in this book use a text rather than a GUI interface; if you are programming for the PC under Windows use the Win32 Console Application project type.Besides the source code...

All you need to learn Sockets
I didn't even know what a socket was before I got this book. Less than a week later I have successfully completed several programs for my employer that use sockets to communicate. This book is written for Unix, but with the supplemental Windows programs at the MKP website I was able to write programs in a Windows environment with ease. This book is clear and concise and contains all the information you need at a price that is at least three times less than that of other books I have seen. I would certainly recommend it to anyone trying to learn sockets.

Concise intro to sockets
Compared to other network programming books, this IS pocket sized. However, you shouldn't judge a book based on its size (like a previous reviewer). It's a great introduction to sockets programming. Very clear and concise, with no wasted pages. I had never worked with sockets before reading this book, and now I understand enough to build non-trivial applications. It's essential for the beginning sockets programmer. Also, if you're new to sockets and looking to jump into the Stevens book, this might make that book a little easier to read.

Hot topics such as TCP/IP and Ethernet don't get enough coverage. too technical (Freeman and Minoli) or too wordy and biased towards telco point of view (Bates and Horak) I. must say I liked Horak's "Communications systems and networks" too --. it has a lot of complimentary and interesting details, historical... Written by experts in the field of computer networking and telco . engineers it gives clear explanation of POTS infrastructure and data. I recommend you to read it. before Hill's book if you are really interested in telecommunications.
