Crazy, Silly, & Wonderful!
I watched this because I adore Dean Martin and the Rat Pack, but only after putting off watching it for so long--I was afraid it would be really stupid and not be worthy of being Dean's next to last movie. I had no reason to fear :) . It is absolutely hilarious! The second one is a million times better (more Dean & Sammy and a huge plus with Frank), but this one's great. It's just crazy and silly and a ton of fun.

The Cannonball Run brings Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett,Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and an all-star cast to the staryting line of the ultimate auto race., a madcapcross country scramble that roars full-speed ahead. Hal Needham, the director of such souped-up hits as "Smokey and the Bandit," "Hooper" and "Smokey and the Bandit II" is at the helm of a wild action-comedy inspired by an acctual event: The Cannonball Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash., an anything- goes, all-stops-out and thoroughly illegal- competition that has grown to legendary proportions in the last ten years. Like The Gumball Rally (1976) before it, former stuntman Hal Needham's The Cannonball Run was inspired by the same real-life cross-country road race. If The Gumball Rally was the critical favorite, The Cannonball Run was the box-office favorite (spawning the almost-as-successful sequel, Cannonball Run II, a few years later). Aside from top-billed stars Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise (stars of Needham's Smokey and the Bandit series) plus Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. (as horny priests), the movie features many of the same actors (Bert Convy, Jamie Farr) that could be found on a typical '80s episode of The Love Boat (along with the same caliber of writing). But as the tagline notes, "You'll never guess who wins"--and it's true. As in most road-race movies, it's the journey that counts, not the destination. This particular journey includes cool cars (like Adrienne Barbeau's black Lamborghini), crazed bikers (led by Peter "Easy Rider" Fonda), hot martial arts action (from Jackie Chan as a Japanese racecar driver), a conspicuously braless Farrah Fawcett (recipient of a Golden Raspberry nomination for her performance), and possibly the most egregious use of product placement featured in a movie up until that time (one vehicle has "GMC Trucks" noted prominently along the top of the windshield, another has "Hawaiian Tropic" painted on the hood). As with many of the films Jackie Chan has made for Golden Harvest, the Hong Kong-based production company behind The Cannonball Run, wacky outtakes are included during the closing credits. --Kathleen C. So bad but so good...
Cannonball Run is a guilty pleasure. No one would ever say it's a good movie, but it's a like train wreck, you find yourself staring. Burt Reynolds tries to live his glory days of Smokey and The Bandit, bringing along the same Director, Hal Needham as well as a slew of falling stars to prop him up. Its as if all of them knew their careers were sliding and it was one last ditch effort to make a great noise. Don't get me wrong, many of these people are talented. Lets explain the premise first. The 'Run' is an auto street (or highway) race, based closely on a real race that was run throughout the 70s that went from New York to California. It was highly illegal, and probably a lot a fun. There is even an appearance by one of the original drivers, Brock Yates, who is now an editor for Car & Driver Magazine and makes an amusing appearance as the MC, explaining how the race goes. Reynolds is JJ McClure, a former race car driver and mechanic who is the standing champ in the race...

Look, ma, no speed limit! It's not just how fast you go, but how funny, in two revved-up comedies about cross-country road races. Michael Sarrazin, Gary Busey and Raul Julia are rival drivers in The Gumball Rally (Side A), the trend-setting coast-to-coast spectacle with genuinely funny characters, great cars, and loads of cartoon-like action (Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide). The cars zip along at top speed and the stars quip along in top form in Cannonball Run II (Side B). Burt Reynolds leads the horse-powered horseplay of a race spanning some 3,000 breakneck miles. Among the players in this joyride: Jackie Chan, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Catherine Bach, Dom De Luise, Dean Martin, Marilu Henner, ShirleyMacLaine...the list goes on. The best cross country race movie.....by a country mile !!
In 1933, legendary motorcyle rider and cross country driver Erwin G. "Cannonball" Baker crossed the United States from coast to coast in approximately 54 hours driving a Graham-Page Model 57 Blue Streak 8...an amazing feat of driving. Nearly, 40 years later in the early 1970's, "Car & Driver" magazine editor Brock Yates started the "Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash" in his honor. These events were the inspiration for a slew of films including the highly enjoyable, "The Gumball Rally", (released in 1976) and the bigger budgeted, but inferior production, "The Cannonball Run" (released in 1981). Both were both primarily action oriented "car chase"comedies, however "Gumball" underplays it's humour with a lesser known cast, thus delivering an overall better film than the Hal Needham directed "Cannonball Run" By far and away "The Gumball Rally", is one of the best car chase films ever made with a jaw dropping collection of performance automobiles from all around the...

"To internal combustion and wind in the face."
In terms of films featuring illegal cross-country racing, I've always considered The Gumball Rally to be the grandpappy to all others that followed, including Cannonball (1976), The Cannonball Run (1981), Cannonball Run II (1984), and Speed Zone! (1989). While I've enjoyed some of these other films, they were never able to reproduce that which made The Gumball Rally such a favorite within the genre, in my opinion. Produced, co-written, and directed by Charles Bail ("CHiPs", "Knight Rider"), the film features a slew of actors including Michael Sarrazin (The Groundstar Conspiracy), Norman Burton (Diamonds Are Forever), Gary `Mr. Head Injury' Busey (D.C. Cab, Silver Bullet), John Durren (Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw), Tim McIntire (Brubaker, Fast-Walking), Susan Flannery ("Days of Our Lives"), J. Pat O'Malley (Alice in Wonderland), Joanne Nail (Switchblade Sisters), Nicholas Pryor (Airplane!, Risky Business), Lázaro Pérez (The Mambo Kings), Tricia O'Neil (Piranha Part Two:...

Forget "Cannonball Run" -- this was first and best
Of the "let's break the law and have some fun while we do it" genre, this is one of the best. The writing, the acting and the production was witty, funny, and still holds up nearly 30 years later. So where, oh where, oh WHERE, is the DVD? Another reviewer said it for all of us when he quoted Raul Julia's character-defining line from the early part of the film: "What is behind me...is not important." And so it goes with VHS...over, behind us, end of story...Bring ON the DVD!Customers are standing by...

Great Movie.... Not Great DVD Transfer
I love these cannonball movies. They sure don't make them like this anymore. Stunt man turned director Hal Needham (Smokey & The Bandit) has done just as an amazing job of casting this movie as he did with the first. Returning from the first CB movie is Burt Reynolds as J.J McClure and Dom DeLuise as Victor with the alter ego of Captain Chaos. Just by reading who is cast in this movie is unbelievable...- Burt Reynolds (Smokey and the bandit)- Dom DeLuise (Many Mel Brooks films)- Frank Sinatra (Rat Pack)- Dean Martin (Rat Pack)- Sammy Davis. Jr. (Rat Pack)- Jamie Far (Clinger/M*A*S*H)- Marilu Henner (Taxi)- Telly Savalas (The Dirty Dozen)- Susan Bach (Daisy/Dukes Of Hazzard)- Jackie Chan (Shakespeare in love)- Shirley MacLaine (Around the world in 80 days)- Tony Danza (Who's the boss)- Jim Nabors (Gomer Pile)- The guy...

This movie has CannonBALLS!
This is a hilarious movie about a cross-country road race. Burt Reynolds and Dom Deluise make a perfect pair as an egotistical playboy and an insecure fat man. Together, they pair up with a duo of fake nuns and pursue the million dollar jackpot that awaits them in Connecticut. This is a pretty tame movie, except for the grotesque moment in which hot stud Burt has to make out with grandma psychic, Shirley McClaine! Even worse, Marilu Henner, a hottie since her days on Taxi, wants to jump in the back seat with...DOM DELUISE!!!EEEEWWWWWWWW!If you can move past the horrible romantic pairings, then check out the rest of this movie, which is actually pretty funny. The original Rat Pack shows up (including Frank, sans Jerry and Joey, thank heavens)for a cameo, and the soundtrack boasts a theme from Menudo. That's right - Menudo! If you don't believe me, just buy this movie and see for yourself! Luckily, Ricky Martin did not include the theme on his later albums, but that's for the...

Cannonball Run

The Cannonball is a run from Savannah Ga. to San Diego Ca. around 2580 miles. It's popularity has grown from 6 old scooters in 2004 to 58 scooters in 2012.  Despite the fact that "Sophia" looked good in her 46 yr old white paint job from a distance, the closer you got the more you could see the ravages of time and the application of various shades of white over accumulated scratches and dings. A lot of the scooters in 2012 were newer and bigger than was probably intended at the start of the event in 2004, but modernity and engine size does not take away from the accomplishment of riding what is basically a city commuter vehicle across a... It is specifically for scooters and directed toward older scooters.

I suspect this run has as much to do with establishing the GOP credentials he needs to become a Superior Court judge, as it does with continuing the Strength Legacy. Truth be told, I love him like a son of my own… and I know his late father looks down on him right now as proud as he can be. He began his work here as a street deputy, and has worked his way into the position of one of our leading criminal... To keep department continuity, “the guy” needed to be a close Strength ally, and he most certainly is. I had no idea “the guy” was going to be former cop, now attorney, Freddie Sanders. I know that soon, each will be joining me at the retirement table, for what I hope will be many, many years of reflection and leisure. While we do not have a foreign enemy that we fight within our national borders, we have an internal criminal problem which, despite the best efforts of law enforcement nationwide, threatens every city and state from coast to coast. All of this could have been avoided, or at least most of it could have been avoided, if the retiring lawman had held a press conference back in November, with the following statement (as you read this, hear it in the voice of Ronnie Strength):. The race to replace the retiring Richmond County sheriff has turned into one gigantic cluster muck. If time machines really existed, I wonder how much money Ronnie Strength would pay to buy one.

There’s other subplots too, among them a cheating fat guy, a singing cowboy, Cannonball’s brother’s underhanded attempts to swing the race in his favor, and his run-ins with an especially eccentric booky. The premise is easy to understand and captivating enough that it actually spawned a number of imitators, including the big budget “Cannonball Run” series. Of course, Cannonball is just one of a group of racers, which include his best friend and mechanic, a psychotic rival, a teenage couple, a manic German, a van full of sexy twenty-something girls, and a black kid constantly on the tail of the girls. Coy “Cannonball” Buckman, a former cop recently released from prison, is primed to win, much to the consternation of his parole officer/girlfriend, and much to the glee of his high-risk gambler brother. After the success of “Death Race 2000,” all he was getting offered were action films, or even more narrowly, car films. “Cannonball” is a movie Paul Bartel apparently made with some reluctance. Towards the end of the movie, a character is shot and killed, someone is crushed when the car they are hiding under is knocked off the jacks, a car explodes in an enormous fireball, and a huge pile-up results. He brings the same emotional coldness to Cannonball that he brought to Frankenstein. “Cannonball” is far from a failure, if a bit uneven. While that storyline is one of the film’s thinner moments, Robert does have some fun, especially in the scene that involves tricking a cop and jumping around a parking lot.
