Great strategies for teaching Language Arts in an inclusive classroom
Teaching middle school students can present its own set of challenges and given that most of the classrooms these days are inclusive, this presents quite an undertaking for teachers who wish to reach out to all their students and take into consideration the diverse needs of the students, in terms of learning styles, communication styles, skills level etc. "Differentiated Instruction for the Middle School Language Arts Teacher" presents a host of practical activities and strategies that can be used in an inclusive classroom. The book is divided into two parts. Part One: Being Successful in the Inclusive Classroom addresses issues such as collaboration (for intervention, with the Child Study Team, with the school team, and with parents/families); determining learning styles to differentiate instruction; and, effective teaching strategies in an inclusive classroom, including alternative assessment methods.Part Two: Language Arts activities for the inclusive middle...

They did it again
Just when I thought that Joan and Kate had to have run out of learning strategies, they've come up with new ones-this time for language arts. What's so special about the activities in this book is that they are geared towards the interests of middle school students in the 21st century, while teaching them effective writing tools that will help them become better writers and students. This book is a "must have" for teachers wishing to creatively engage their students in all aspects of the writing process. I can't wait to see Joan and Kate's next book. It seems that there is no end to their ability to continuously create new and exciting learning strategies.Anne Gunar

It doesn't get any better!
I wish the teachers could have known how to make learning this much fun when I was in school. Perhaps Amazon should send a copy to each senator and congressperson as ideas to be implemented by local boards of education.

Great Ideas for middle school kids at learning Level!
This book is great! It is filled with relevant and fun activities that even the most experienced math teacher can utilize in their classroom. I especially liked the detailed and "user friendly lesson plan format", the inclusion of national standards, and the Home/School Connection section. I also really liked the Geometry Activity in Chapter 6! Here various types of learners identify many types of angles using different learning strategies, such as making a sun-dial with the teacher to conceptualizing and creating their own oragami figures. Inexpensive and common classroom supplies make these imaginative activities possible for kids with all types of learning levels and schools with all types of budgets.

The book you've been waiting for
I just received a copy of this book and I couldn't wait to look through it. I immediately found at least 10 activities that look like fun and would capture the attention of all types of learners, from gifted children to students with special needs. I especially like the home/school connection section that focuses on homework that includes participation from family members and is geared towards the interests of young teens. A math problem might ask a student to find the area of her bedroom, or draw a graph of favorite ice cream flavors of friends and relatives. I also found value in the first section of the book, which explains learning styles, intervention strategies, and how to set up an inclusive classroom. I highly recommend this book to anyone who teaches or works with middle school aged children.

Exactly what the middle school science teacher needs
As a member of a child study team, I am always happy to refer special resources to the teachers with whom I work. In the past, Joan D'Amico's books have been met with tremendous excitement and enthusiasm so it was with great anticipation that I awaited her newest book, "Differentiated Instruction for the Middle School Science Teacher." I was certainly not disappointed. This book includes learning tools for children who are gifted, average, learning disabled and physically disabled, in a very interactive and creative format. The activities are fun and the children become so involved that they forget that the purpose is to learn, although that is exactly what they are doing. This latest book is one that I look forward to recommending and one that I know the teachers will be thrilled to use.Anne Gunar, L.C.S.W.

not enough stars!!
This review has been written by my friend in Milford Connecticut:I have been a special education teacher of children and A university Professor of Special Education since 1964, and have never found a better book for general use by educators. This book runs the gamut, always clearly written in plain English rather than "psychologese" or jargon, easy to adapt to any age and any exceptionality, and should be a required source book for all teachers in America. I have already placed it on my list of required texts for the Fall semester at Southern CT State University, and I know that my students will thank me! Joyce M. Saltman, Ed.D.

Excellent Resource
This book is an excellent resource for anyone teaching reading. The worksheets can be utilized with any book though suggestions are given. The worksheets hit almost every important reading topic a 5th grader needs to know. Getting a different assignment than their neighbor has not been an issue for any of my students. This book allows each student in my class to get practice with the same topic but on their own academic level. I plan on ordering this book for writing as well!

Differentiated Instruction Activity

For me, as an Assistant Professor in the CPS Master of Education Teacher Licensure Program , I have observed that many of our teacher candidates struggle with both the significance of differentiating instruction, as well as, the actual practice of... The following are some of the most effective strategies that I have discovered thus far: (a) the use of hands-on activities with a choice of manipulatives, (b) teaching varying problem-solving strategies, (c) scaffolding as much as needed, (d)... Assessment is an ongoing diagnostic activity, and learning tasks are planned and adjusted based on assessment data. Teachers use various instructional strategies to target instruction to student needs. Students are assessed in multiple ways, and each student’s progress is measured at least in part form where that student began (p. 106). Nicole poignantly discusses how she underestimated both the importance and complexity of differentiating instruction. She also offers both research-based best practices, as well as, her own practical theories regarding differentiation. The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development ( ASCD ) (as cited in Shalaway, 2005) has identified the following as best practices in an effectively differentiated learning environment for all students:. The way Nicole dialogues between her own practical theories and the dominant literature in the field is a crucial process in new teacher’s ability to understand and engage best practice in their work and it is my goal to facilitate this in my...

Smaller class sizes are not a helpful factor in mitigating the demands on a teacher’s preparation time, since constructing a lesson/activity for three students is more or less the same task as preparing one for 35. If the DI structure presents different students with work of varying levels of challenge (simplistically: a lower hurdle for the struggling student and a higher hurdle for the accelerated student), then over time this tends to exacerbate the... If DI is supposed to be highly situational – each teacher designs each lesson around the needs of this year’s students, focused on this day’s lesson, on each day, in response to assessment data and changing student needs, then a steady diet of DI...  In short, while the goal of DI is to create an inclusive classroom, it can exacerbate the differences between students if the differentiation allows for differences in student skill levels or rates of achieving mastery. Readers should know that I’m making a distinction between “formal DI,” (my phraseology) where most every lesson is structured around different pathways for different groups of children, and “informal DI,” a looser form where a series of lessons on...  My first two blogs about differentiated instruction (DI) outlined the rationale and merits of this instructional approach.  Sometimes DI is misunderstood as a way to “track” students in the same classroom, providing different levels of academic challenge for different groups of students. There must be empirical truth to this: as I have talked with many administrative colleagues, who have collectively observed hundreds of teachers in diverse public, parochial, and independent educational settings, it is a challenge to find any...
