Creative choices for kinder-2 gifted students
This K-2 series of books for differentiation continues Laurie Westphal's tradition of quality high level options for gifted students. The activity choices require little preparation, are well explained both for the student to complete and the teacher to implement, and they age appropriate for high ability learners. Reading Chapter 1 about the power of making choices is important to understanding how to make menus an effective tool for providing differentation, especially in a mixed ability classroom. Laurie provides good explanations about the purpose of providing choice, and how it is a skill that should be developed to keep student interest high. Math does not lend itself easily to differentiation. This book provides lots of options that seem fun and engaging for children to use their mathematical reasoning and number sense skills in new ways. Top to learn more
Useful Tool
As a talented and gifted education specialist with a specialization in early childhood, I am thrilled about this valuable resource for teachers of young children. Touching on many of the concepts taught in the early elementary years such as money, measurement, geometry, and much more, teachers are given menus that allow students the gift of choice and ownership of their knowledge while challenging them to create products within and outside of their comfort zones. These menus can be utilized in many different ways, giving teachers the flexibility of assigning one day projects or two week studies. Each menu comes with a breakdown of its benefits and limitations so the teacher can easily create assignments that meet the needs of the students he/she is teaching. This is a great product for teachers who wish to challenge each student in a whole classroom setting . Top to learn more

Product Description
Differentiating Instruction With Menus: Math for grades K–2 offers teachers everything needed to create a student-centered learning environment based on choice. This book provides several different types of menus that students can use to select exciting products that they will develop so teachers can assess what has been learned—instead of using a traditional worksheet format. Topics addressed include numbers and number sense, operations, geometry, and measurement.
Differentiating Instruction With Menus: Math contains attractive reproducible menus, each based on the levels of Bloom's Revised taxonomy, that students can use as a guide when making decisions about which products they will develop after they study a major concept or unit. Using creative and challenging choices found in Three-Shape menus, Tic-Tac-Toe menus, Meal menus, Give Me Five menus, 2-5-8 menus, and List menus, students will look forward to sharing their newfound knowledge throughout the year. Also included are specific guidelines for products, graphics to help students easily match a product with its criteria, a rubric for assessing student products, and teacher introduction pages for each menu. This is a must-have for any teacher wanting to differentiate for gifted and advanced learners!
A good alternative to worksheets during intervention or small group time
Our school district will begin their second year of implementing RTI with the three tiers servicing our high, average and below students. Our teachers are looking for ways to meet the learning needs of their more proficient students while working with their classmates in small groups for intervention. Differentiation Instruction with Menus Math is an flexible, easy to use source for worthwhile independent activities. I especially like that each menu has objectives, materials and time frames for the topics that K-2 children are studying: number sense, operations, geometry and measurement. The generic, all-purpose rubric included on page 47 is clear, easy to use and full of friendly graphics that will entice any student and teacher. Product guidelines can be posted in the classroom for students to refer to as they work. This book will be part of our presentations to teachers as a good source of independent activities for their students. Top to learn more

Detailed templates for differentiated lessons
Another practical differentiation guide from Carol Ann Tomlinson.More than an introduction, this book contains lesson plans for a variety of middle school subjects. For each subject, you can look at a complete instructional unit. Teachers looking for a step-by-step guide to creating differentiated lessons, look no further.I have to say, the first unit I designed this way took FOREVER. Don't get discouraged on the first lesson and don't think you have to differentiate everything right out of the box (the mistake I made the first time). Top to learn more

Durden, who served ten years as a U. S. Air Force intelligence officer and worked another decade as a stay-at-home dad, teaches in a room that’s part of a district pilot program to test one-to-one computing. it’s the only one-to-one class at Forest Lake. The assessments come in countless forms, from writing assignments to computer-graded quizzes to one-on-one conversations. What sets Forest Lake apart is the staff’s dedication to challenge each student at his or her own level, every day — and computers are essential to the success of that differentiated approach. When you walk into any given classroom at Forest Lake Elementary School, in Columbia, South Carolina, you see there is no one thing happening. Forest Lake, a public school with a diverse population of 592 students in grades preK-5, is a technology magnet school. In one corner of the classroom on a winter morning, five students are handwriting their opinions of books they’ve read. Children might be reading books, practicing math skills on a computer, creating videos with a Flip cam, contributing to the class blog, producing PowerPoint slide shows, or reviewing suffixes and prefixes on an interactive whiteboard — often all...
