Decent, not spectacular!
As anyone who has read my other reviews knows, I am constantly having to remind myself of the price of DSLR/Film-making equipment. There was a time not so long ago, where a Matte box like this would have costed upwards of $300-400! Luckily with the advent of DSLR video, the market was suddenly opened up to Indie Film-makers who (a) didn't need to rent expensive film gear, and (b) needed cheap accessories. With this event came many sub-par film-making gear, however there are accessories, such as this Matte Box that are half-decent.PROS- Price is right- Not too shoddily made- Does its job wellCONS- Mostly plastic- Only fits filters up to 72mmDESIGN/BUILDAs other reviewers have mentioned, the rod connections are the only metal part about this set-up, which depending on how you look at it can either be good or bad. Great for the price!
Customer Video Review Length:: 3:23 MinsI am using this rig for my Sony NEX-3 camera and Sony Z1U camcorder! The build quality is great with the matte box being all plastic and the frame being metal. Managed to mount it on a tripod and the shoulder mount works well. Does require a lot of tightening and set up time would be around 25min max. I've provided pictures above of my set up for reference. The follow focus has a long enough cord to fit pretty much all lens sizes. The white ring around the follow focus allows me to make measurement markings on it using a sharpe marker and cleans off nicely. Over all nice set for the pro and beginner.

Great little Rig!
The pictures are very accurate to what this thing looks and feels like. I was originally worried it would be light, or that the rails would be some sort of plastic, but its not. This rig has a nice quality feel to it. rails are aluminum I believe, very solid. The follow focus is very solid. I am very happy with this rig. I am 6'1 200lbs and this thing feels great in my hands.A couple things to note. The barn doors are plastic, as well as the hinges for it, its fine for now, but I could imagine them drooping over time, or losing their grip. Metal would be better. Make sure you add weights to the back to balance out the rig otherwise it will be very front heavy.

I was expecting it to be somewhat subpar in quality compared to the "ridiculously expensive" boxes, but was delighted to see it was full production quality and worked just as I needed. It's very solid and when everything is locked down, it holds, even in a steady wind when filming outdoors.The only thing I would have liked to see is a bellows style lens attachment instead of the rubber rings, but they work just fine and give you several sizes for different lenses, so it's not really an issue.Please note, this is probably not the best option for light and fast 'run and gun' style shoots because its pretty heavy duty and almost all metal. But, then again, Red Star makes a smaller and lighter matte box for that purpose, which is also very inexpensive.This thing makes my camera look like it came straight out of Hollywood on a production set, and while it certainly looks complicated... The purchase of a Mattebox is one of the more important purchases one makes when shooting film or video, so when looking around at the low price options I found myself saying "I will probably get burned, but for less that $300 I will take the chance."After getting the Matte box I feel pretty good about my purchase. here are some positives and negatives:Positives:1) It's really the right size for a DSLR rig. The $1,000 mattebox I had been considering buying is really large and adds significant weight to the system. This matters to me because I use a light weight jib arm all the time and any additional weight makes the system less stable. I also do a lot of hand held work and as many of you know your operating needs darn near perfect in order to avoid "Jelloing" thus I also don't like adding a lot of bulk to my rig for no reason. Shopped around and saw a lot of over priced matt boxes with same features. Watched a video review ([...]) and decided to give this a try. The seller mistakenly reported this item was in stock when I bought it which delayed things a bit, but upon contacting them, they upgraded the shipping and it got here on time.The item was better then I expected. Very good quality and professional build. Used it the other day shooting at the beach in direct sunlight... did exactly what it was supposed to do.Kit comes well stocked with everything you need except I use mine with a JAG35 rail support and a battery grip on my Canon 7D and had to build a short extender for the rail mount so that the box was high enough to fit my lens position.Does what a matt box is supposed to do, good build, well stocked kit, great price! This Matte Box is built like a tank, apparently the exact same product as RR Micro but way cheaper. I was looking for a Matte Box that would last a long time and that I could use for many years (and cameras) to come, and this piece of equipment definitely fits the bill. I haven't really used the filter holders yet and can't say anything about them; the swing away arm can be a bit difficult to open and I wish it would lock on the other side, but altogether great product and value. Decent construction, basically RR Micro for half. Filter trays are soft plastic, and don't really hold filters, however - sort of the point, I would think! I had to modify them with a little silicone and cutting to work at all. Cut the right side rods which even still obstruct right side focus pull. Bad design if you ever need to put the FF on the right, but that's the fault of the guys who designed the original for this copy. Top to learn more
