Golfer of a Lifetime
TW, the original, is one of the all-time great golfing legends. And the legend continues to grow, as we all witnessed at Turnberry. That a champion golfer would be asked to produce an instruction video is no surprise and traces its history all the way back to Bobby Jones' Hollywood golf instruction videos produced in the 1930's. "Lessons of a Lifetime" was obviously made by a very intelligent man who has spent a lot of time thinking about the golf swing. And it takes a certain amount of introspection and humility to admit that despite having won 8 majors, he didn't completely understand it until 1994 when he says he discovered "the secret". Let me just say this as an avid golfer used to paying an hourly rate of $100-120 for golf tune-ups: this is the best instruction I have received, probably ever. I didn't say best video, I said instruction, period, live or on tape. Take a look at the simplicity of his swing. Compare it to the many videos you can find on the web of Ben Hogan. While...

Idiot proof instruction
Tom Watson's dvd is instructional, informational, and logical. This is the best it gets on the fundementals. His instruction is composed of straight forward, no nonsense lessons allowing the duffer to become the hustler. He covers the basics and then some. The lessons are divided into two dvds. The first going over the golf swing and shot types and the second going over the short game. The first dvd is less than an hour and the second is an hour and a half. This is a perfect example of how the short game has more value than the golf swing. The best instruction on the market for mechanics and how to play the game.

Product Description

JUST RELEASED APRIL 2010 During a career that's spanned 40 years, included 68 professional tournament victories, 8 of them majors (another 5 on the Champions Tour), Tom Watson has never stopped winning-or learning. Through his relationship with the late Byron Nelson, his own unceasing research and the epiphanies that come only to one who's tested theory under the most intense competitive pressure, Tom has become a master teacher as well as player. No tour player understands his swing, or the swing, as well. He takes you through the swing and the shots that will make your game more consistent and take your scores lower. You get his insights on every aspect of the full swing and short game, his approach to course management and the secrets to success in competition. In short, the Lessons of a Lifetime, the lessons that allowed Tom, at age 59, to challenge for the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry. The two-DVD set containing close to three hours of golf instruction and an accompanying booklet of 44 lessons was filmed at The Greenbrier Resort, where Watson is Golf Professional Emeritus. This instructional program is the ultimate learning experience, covering all facets of the game-from the grip to full shots, to chipping, putting and the secret of his timeless swing, plus specialty shots including those required in strong wind conditions. Consistency, contact, alignment, firmness of grip, pivot points, release, rhythm and legendary coach, Harvey Penick's "dead-aim" philosophy are all covered in the two comprehensive DVDs. Watson's instruction comes across in an easy-to-understand manner making it seem your standing right beside him on the tee or green. "I believe my understanding of the swing is keener today than it ever has been. This is my way of passing that knowledge along. Play well." -Tom Watson. Top to learn more

Well Done Mr. Watson
What is the secret to Tom Watson's success over the years? I was hoping he would tell me in one short hour so I could go out and score in the low 70's or maybe in the 60's. Well that's not going to happen real soon. But Tom did an excellent job in reviewing the fundamentals that will benefit golfers at any level. His comprehensive explanations cover many aspects of the game from womb to tomb in a clear concise manner. I now know his secret and with a little practice maybe I can beat the other three in my foursome. The two DVD set with booklet are about the same price as a round of golf with a portion going toward the Bruce Edwards Fund. I recommend this excellent piece of work by Tom Watson.

Great swing model; not just a set of golf tips
Hank Haney's "Essentials of the Swing" is a great full swing golf instructional book. That fact his golf swing plan is based on a a-z set of golf principles, rather than a set of tips and tricks to temporarily cure golf swing defects, puts this book heads and shoulders over just about any other golf insturction book you would find at your nearest Barnes and Noble or Borders.I have read over 40 golf instruction books over the past couples years and this book easily makes it into my top 5 books that I would recommend if you are serious about improving your golf swing and not just looking for a few miracle cures for your slice or hook. Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons," David Leadbetter's "The Fundamentals of Hogan," (Hogan's book dissected with suggestions for improvements), Nick Faldo's "A Swing For Life," (very much influenced by Leadbetter), Jim Hardy's "The Plane Truth for Golfer's Master Class," and Jack Nicklaus's "Golf My Way" are all books worth reading 5 times or more...

"Get a Plan to Improve" Help
What I appreciate about Hank is his admiration and thanks for John Jacobs, whom is the teacher that inspired my pro. They are all about essentials: grip, stance, alignment, plane, ball flight. Everytime my swing is way off, it is usually one or more of these.Hank has so many good points every golfer can achieve much with, e.g. "The club you want to look at the closest in determining your ball-flight curvature mistake is your driver." From this one develops a plan of improvement, with looking at tendencies and paths for corrections with these essentials. More gleanings: "If you are going to get any part of your body alignment correct at address, make it your eyes and shoulders." "If you start your downswing with your upper body, the club will likely come down on too steep a plane." "Don't go out on the range with your favorite club or clubs. .... Instead, work on the clubs you are struggling with." "During Tiger's warm-up, he practices all the shots that he feels...

Hank does what he does best, but not the Publisher
Just read Hank's latest book and found it highly informative and excellent overall. His instruction is straight-forward and easy to follow...he obviously knows his subject and conveys it like you would expect "Tiger's Coach" to do. I believe it is a book that I will reference over and over like Hank states he did with Hogan's "Five Lessons..." and John Jacob's "Practical Golf." Both of which I have read and reference often also. I've also read Nicklaus' "Golf My Way" and of course Tiger's "How I Play Golf," two books that are also well written and highly informative. This leads me to the reason I have rated Hank's book with only 4 stars when I would rank the others I've mentioned with 5 stars. The editing and photographs in Hank's book are average at best (2-3 stars) and certainly not what I would expect from a hardcover 1st Edition. Hank and the reader deserve better from the publisher that he praises, John Wiley & Sons. While I'm not a professional writer myself, I do know...

Timeless Instruction from a Master
This excellent teaching device found me at the right time, having mysteriously started struggling with my takeaway and back swing [right elbow flying out at the top!]. I poured through it in a night to search for the secret cure and I found it. I can't believe it took me 18 years of golf to discover this book. This really should be in every beginner's bag, to get his or her mechanics and fundamentals together, as well as any long time golfer who occasionally 'loses' it. It's quite a testament to its staying power to note that there are no reviews of less than five stars for this wonderful manual [my rating will be no different]. Hogan boils down the game to one important aspect, striking the ball. Grip, stance, setup, back swing, downswing are all meticulously verbally described, and then highlighted by amazingly detailed and accurate drawings. Written as a series of SI articles in the 50's, the teaching voice has lost none of its punch over the ensuing years. The gods...

You Won't Have to Buy Anything Else to Improve Your Golf
Forget all the other gimmicks you see on television infomercials; the super drivers, wedges, trouble clubs, fairway woods, videos, swing trainers, etc. Also, don't pay any attention to the lessons presented monthly in the two leading golf magazines. They're often in conflict with each other and give you too many things to think about during the swing. If you really want to improve your golf, buy this book. Written by one of golf's greatest players and clearest thinkers on the mechanics of the golf swing, this book will, in simple and concise language and wonderfully detailed drawings, improve your game. My belief is, someone who has trouble breaking 100 will be able to get to 90 in short order. Anyone who shoots bogey golf (90) will be able to work him or herself into the low 80's. And if you're like me, in the 7 to 10 handicap range, the book presents a number checks on the grip, stance, and swing plane so that if your game does occasionally go awry, you'll soon be...

The authoritave book on the basics
As a kid I took a few lessons from a top notch instructor, and I always found it helpful to think back and swing the way he taught me. Now in my early 40's, after years of infrequent play and bad advice, I lost my game. I read Hogan's book, and realized that it was the Hogan method - grip, stance, everything - that I was taught as a kid. This book was a godsend.Hogan doesn't just tell you what to do, he explains why. He shows how to make the basic REPEATING swing that can be used with ALL clubs, driver through PW. This makes the game so simple. You can use this book to quickly learn the correct swing, and confidently hit a good shot every time because you know you are doing it the right way. This lets you think less and less about swinging mechanics and more and more about strategy, and the game becomes immensely more pleasurable.Put this book and a 9 iron by your bedstand, practice as you read it, and you will find youurself hitting with more confidence and consistency...

You can shoot in the 70's!

Ben Hogan has long believed that any golfer with average coordination can learn to break 80 if he applies himself intelligently -- and here, with Herbert Warren Wind, and artist Anthony Ravielli, he tells you, step by step, just how to go about it.

The greatest golfer of our generation has distilled his experience as teacher, player, and observer of golf into a series of richly illustrated "visual instructions" that not only can improve your game and lower your score, but also can help you get even more fun out of what many people already think is the most enjoyable game in the world.

Each chapter, each tested "fundamental" is explained and demonstrated with amazing detail and clarity. It's as though the master himself were right there at your elbow, giving you a personal lesson with the same thought and care that has gone into his lifetime of golf.

The Modern Fundamentals of Golf is no instant and easy shortcut. There is none. But with Ben Hogan as your pro, you can master these basic movements very quickly. And then you can go on to develop a correct, powerful swing that will repeat. As Ben Hogan says, it's only then that you'll "discover golf for the first time." Top to learn more

Ben Hogan's premise in this 1957 classic is driven home in bold letters: "THE AVERAGE GOLFER IS ENTIRELY CAPABLE OF BUILDING A REPEATING SWING AND BREAKING 80." Religions are founded on less, and Hogan's detailed analyses and illustrated demonstrations of grip, stance, posture, and the two basic components of the swing make up a sacred book. Though its very simplicity seems dated, this is the tome of technique that should serve as the foundation of every golf library. Top to learn more

This Book Is My Holy Grail
I have played golf for 45 years and my lowest handicap was 5.I have read and reread every single instructional book, including Hogan,Leadbetter,Ballard,Nicklaus,as well as The Golfing Machineand The Search For The Perfect Golf Swing. My library has more golf books than I have had bogeys.I have also been to McLeans School at Doral three times. All said,I consider all of the above a complete waste of my time. Dante's clear and precise and simple explanation of how the golf swing works from a physical as well as a theoretical point of view, including the explanation of the Coefficient of Angular Momentum, has given mea new life on the golf course. My ball striking is pure,my confidence is high, and my mind is no longer paralyzed by hundreds of worthless swing thoughts.I have zero interest in any more lessons from any pro,do not read golf magazines anymore, and scoff at the latest theorieswhich are created just to sell more books...

Dante's "Magic" is teaching new tricks to old dogs.
I went from a 3 handicap in high school to what G.P.Wodehouse describes as a "goof". When I couldn't play every day my game went to pot. I had never developed a solid swing that I could repeat time after time, I was clueless. I am now 41 years old and this book changed my life. Well, my golf life at least. I love the game again. Joe Dante teaches the "magic moves" in a way even I can understand and I'm a hardheaded old dog to whom new tricks are hard to teach. The key to golf is delivering the club head to the ball square to the target (accuracy) while generating maximum club head speed (distance). Dante's early wrist break method is the key to consistent accuracy. His lateral hip shift is no secret to golf but it is the key to clubhead speed. The magic is that Dante teaches these moves in such a clear and concise way that, if you follow directions and practice his method, you will improve your golf swing and scores!

Best Of The Best
I don't usually (how about never!!) write book reviews; however, this is one book I feel like deserves my input. Being a golf book junkie, I feel like I am qualified to put in my two cents. For what it may be worth, this book, in my opinion, is the absolute best book that has ever been written in regard to helping golfers achieve success. Yes, there are other books that can technically explain various positions, etc, but this book by Dante gives you practical and easily understood instructions on improving/understanding the golf swing. Simply put, this book is the ONLY book I could unequivocally give a 5-star rating.

Product Description

The legendary golf instructional, available again. This is, along with Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, THE book Golf professionals turn to.

"Thirty years ago I was recommending Joe Dante's book The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf as a must read for aspiring PGA professionals.  What Dante said in '62 has influenced many of the game's finest teachers.  Dante was a visionary."--Gary Wiren, author of New Golf Mind

When published, The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf   radically changed the way many players thought about the golf swing.  Dante's system showed how simple it was to improve one's game, and at the same time gave the golfer one of the most comprehensive analyses of swing mechanics ever published.  Now, thirty-three years after its original publication, Main Street is proud to reissue this classic instructional. Dante begins by sweeping out all the misconceptions of the game.  "If good golf is to be learned and the poor player is to improve, a purging must take place, painful as it may be." Dante discusses a few basics of grip and stance, and then he gets to the heart of his book, the four magic moves.  As he reveals each of the moves, Dante focuses on the physical checkpoints so that any golfer can make sure that his or her swing is on the right track.

The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf is straightforward and easy to understand, yet unlike other golf books it is irreverent and audacious in its approach to mastering the game.  The publication of this rediscovered classic is sure to establish Joe Dante's reputation as one of golf's greatest teachers. I finally found my Slot with this Book!
I am a five handicap and have read an insurmountable amount of golf instruction books. However, I have never read a book that freed my mind up more than the Slot Swing. I have always though that the backswing was so important and that you had to swing it back on the same plane that it comes down on. The vivid pictures and great imagery in this book really helped me understand that all great players had their own way of finding the slot. I thought a lot about this and realized that I had always played my best when I felt like I took the club a little up going back and then dropped it back under coming down, but I always went away from it because I thought it was wrong. Jim McLean provides incredible evidence that there are three ways to find the slot and that there is no one perfect backswing!!!! I am so glad I ordered this book it has had a huge impact on my golf game. I highly recommend it.

Excellent
I am a self-taught 11-handicap (20+ rounds in the 80s) after starting to play 11 months ago. During the never-ending process of trying to "figure" out the golf swing I stumbled upon many things that "worked" and many, many more that did not. This book discusses and explains many of the things I remember "discovering" but could not explain, recall properly, or repeat.Other books (and I read at least a dozen) mostly focus on ONE PRESCRIBED way of doing things, a set of hard rules, and a plethora of tips. Unlike them, "The Slot Swing" explains a very simple swing FRAMEWORK within which all great swings can be identified. One is free to "customize" and "personalize" how to do things as long as he stays within the described parameters. Very liberating and super-intuitive.I personally never liked how specific swing rules and tips were -- swinging that way lacked "freedom of expression" and just could not account for so much variability of good swings on the Tour. If...

Finally the truth gets revealed!
Over the years I`ve purchased my share of golf instruction books sold on Amazon but never considered writing a review. This book is different because it holds the secret to the pro swing and it's pictured right on the front cover.Mclean explains by comparative analysis that the only thing a golfer needs to accomplish on the downswing is to get on a shallow downswing plane. Jim refers to this movement as getting into the "slot".Jim is without question the best golf analyst of the modern era. In many ways this book is an update to Ben Hogan's original ideas regarding the Plain of the glass concept however Jim goes all the way demonstrating the many more variables that Mr. Hogan didn't consider. In defense of Mr. Hogan he didn't have access to high speed film.I warn you, once you get the feeling of the slot swing you might want to kill yourself for wasting all those rounds of golf you played hitting over the top.If you're ready for this...
