This trusted annual reference, now in its 21st edition and edited by Writer's Digest Books editor Chuck Sambuchino, spells out what agents expect from a query letter, synopsis, book proposal, opening lines, and more.Last weekend I attended the Hampton Roads Writers' Third Annual Writers' Conference in Virginia Beach, VA where Mr. Sambuchino facilitated an in-depth workshop entitled EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AGENTS. Don't feel too bad if you couldn't make it to this fantastic conference because, as an added bonus, the...

Most Thorough Source of Literary Agents on the Planet!
I have several years' of this publication, and I pick up a new one each year. The latest is as grand as I expected, to include such advice as "How Not to Start Your Book" and "Agent and Self-Publishing," both so appropriate in these days of fast-slinging publication. There's even a separate part on screenplays. It's a must-have if you have any inkling of a need to find an agent, or even if you are just wondering whether they fit into your plan. Chuck Sambuchino has done it again, and the 2012 Guide to Literary Agents is a worthy purchase for any serious writer.

Well organized! This saved me loads of time.
I have several different books featuring literary agent listings. Mr. Sambuchino's book streamlined the time it took for me to research agents who would be most interested in my book. How wonderful it was to not to have to read every single agent write up! It also provided valuable information such as if they are AAR members. With the query process so cumbersome, I appreciated that this author respected that my time was important as well.

Very Useful
I purchased this book because I am looking to obtain a literary agent for the first time. I found the articles at the beginning of the book to be very helpful. There were useful articles on how to use the book, what agents do, what agents are looking for, dos and don'ts of writing a query letter and more. The listings are easy to peruse and give information on what the agency is looking for and what types of books they have sold. There are also submission guidelines. Whether I will actually get an agent or not remains to be seen, but if I don't, it won't be the book's fault. This is a must-get for anyone looking for a literary agent.

You Need This!
As I near completion of my first major novel, I've been dreading the next step - researching the hundreds of agents out there, trying to find a good match for my manuscript. I know I need an agent. That's the most important thing I've learned from all the writing conferences I've attended over the last few years. Editors have become so overworked, many are accepting submissions only from agents. I can't really blame them. Agents help weed out the "bad" manuscripts, or help whip them into shape before passing them on.I am so thankful I discovered the "2011 Guide to Literary Agents." (Okay, I should have known it was out there, but I've been procrastinating this research for a while.) I know there's all kinds of information online, but I really like having something that's easy to tote around (without printing out) and that I can take notes on and highlight and even rip some pages out of.I love the format, the Specialties Index, and the Glossary - which I...

For new writers, this is it!!
I found this book to be the ultimate resource if you've just written your first book and are wondering what to do next, like I was. It has listings of hundreds of agents as well as detailed information about each one and what they are looking for. The first half of the book is dedicated to helping you write a query letter (with examples of good and bad letters) and helping you edit your book. It also has tons of other information on the do's and dont's of trying to get an agent and on what happens after you get one. This is the only book you'll need. I highly recommend it for new writers.

Jeff Herman's Guide is an Amazing Help for Anyone Looking to Publish
This book is actually really amazing and helpful. There are detailed sections on what each publishing company wants and will publish, what editors are like and how to work with them, specific agents at different agencies and what they are interested in agenting, and even information for the first timers that are just getting into the idea of getting their work published. This is good for some one who has zero knowledge of how on earth to begin to publish a book. For those who have published, but need a new agent, this book is for you too. The literary agent section is enormous, and gives you good insight to each of the agents interviewed for this book.I'm still going through and highlighting certain agents that I would be interested in contacting (because the agent the type of books I write). There are a few in there that are just plain scary sounding, but others that just seem open and very friendly. Overall, I really love this book. It's given me not only ground to stand...

Big but not very usable
The book has plenty names of Publishers and agents, however the agents are not listed by genre and since you need to find an agent prior to being published, it makes the search difficult.

Guide To Literary Agents

So she’s typing in “literary agent” in LinkedIn and seeing which of her connections know which literary agents. Today Writer Abroad tried searches like “perfectionist literary agent who moved to Europe and failed at something as simple as buying milk” and other searches relevant to someone she thinks might be attracted to a memoir about identity set in a... Anyhow, in case you’re not Tina Fey either, Writer Abroad thought she’d share some of her agent-finding tactics in hopes that you’ll share some of yours. Writer Abroad should find an agent. So far, Writer Abroad hasn’t gotten very far with researching agents (being interrupted by baby with foot stuck in parrot toy is a new occupational hazard for her).

I’m relatively new to the exciting world of professional writing, free-lance-writers and budding authors who’d all like to see their work in print. I was educated in the public school system and although I left school behind me at the age of fourteen, I never stopped learning. To have found this you must either be a personal friend or an avid reader/writer with a passion for the printed word, either way I’d like to thank you for dropping by. I was born in 1959 as a child I lived in NSW. Our children told me my imagination alone had captured many tales and adventures through story- telling when they were young, which just begged to be put into print.

In addition to editing the Guide to Literary Agents and its companion blog, Chuck is also a best-selling humor author.   Each backer who snaps up this reward (5 available) may submit up to one page (single spaced) of an agent query letter or book synopsis for feedback from Chuck.

Chuck Sambuchino at Guide to Literary Agents is giving away a free ticket to the San Francisco Writer’s conference held Feb. Go to Guide to Literary Agents for more details. The FREE registration pass includes all sessions and keynotes in the main conference of the SFWC, at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins Hotel in the neighborhood of Nob Hill in San Francisco.
