If you shoot b/w, but haven't shot Tri-X, just do it!
Tri-X is a classic among classics. A Kodak rep, in a recent article about their film division sang the praises of the recent new formulation of T-MAX 400 even mentioned that they haven't dared to touch Tri-X because of it's standing as a true classic. When I first got into photography, I immediately felt disdain for Tri-X. I considered it a 'student film,' the mark of a true amateur! Years down the road, I became less snobby and less foolish, and it has entered my top three film choices of all time (Acros and PanF+ are the other two, for the curious...)So, for those who don't know, here's the skinny on Tri-X. It's a classic grain emulsion. And, that grain will probably show, but it will look smooth and sexy. It's closest competition in the market, Ilford HP5+, has much sharper, in-your-face grain, in my opinion. You can push and pull Tri-X 2 stops in whatever developer you ordinarily use without really batting an eyelash. You can abuse Tri-X. One doesn't...

simply the best
Kodak Tri-x 400 is my favorite film. Images are hella crisp, with the right amount of grain. There's nothing like it. I like to buy one when ordering around $20 of books, and then the shipping's (usually) free. or even better, get them from CVS. If darkrooms are hard to come by in your useless town, try thedarkroom.com. Super great results in about three days. This sounds like a sketchy advertisement but i'm super genuine in my creepy corporate loyalties.

It does what it's supposed to
My photos turned out great. I really don't know what else there is to say about a roll of film.

This film STILL delivers.
I remain convinced that black and white film photography bests digital manipulation to this day. It may only be my subjective opinion, but I am not an old photographer - in fact I only started taking pictures about 6 years ago, when the digital craze had already taken over the world. All that said, Kodak Tri-X remains one of my favorite non-professional films. The grain is very fine, but shows up beautifully in larger prints. Contrast is wonderful on the negatives and transfers well.At less than $5 a roll, and with 36 exposures, this is a very economical way of shooting film!Grab a roll, your favorite camera, and head off for a day of REAL shooting!

Tried and true; for decades, a standard
Tri-X has been a standard b&w film - in different formats - for many decades. For many, it has been THE standard against which others have been measured. I've happily used it over a span of more than 40 years. Over that time, Kodak only improved this product - increasing the image quality while retaining a relatively fast ASA of 400 (though some photographers, inc. me on occasion, expose it at a lower number such as 200 then compensate during development, to achieve a broader range of tones, which can be useful especially in certain lighting conditions). The b&w film photographer probably could do no better than with Tri-X, although Kodak's T-Max line of b&w films is also excellent; the choice between the two is mostly a matter of personal preference or of habit. The only issue worth raising, as I see it, is whether Kodak will continue making the film or whether it will go the way of other excellent Kodak products that are no longer made, such as the venerable...

Pleased overall
I bought 10 rolls of this film for a photography class. Pleased in general. The only thing I don't like about it is that this particular brand of film takes longer to develop than other brands of film. A couple of minutes are tacked on with the developer and 5 or more minutes with the fixer. All of my rolls have turned up magenta in color which I would worry about if this was any other brand of film but was told it was fine with this one.

Wonderful versatile B&W film
TriX has been my go-to film for years. It's versatile enough to be pushed or pulled from ISO 100-3200. The classic grain structure is really nice to have and can be very appealing for certain images. The shadow and highlight detail is outstanding on this film, and the emulsion has been consistent for years. I primarily develop in D-76 (rated between 100 and 800) or Diafine (rated at 1250). I've pushed this film to 3200 with okay results. The grain gets very visible at 1600 or 3200, but photos are still reasonably good for these high speeds.Overall, I am very happy with TriX and will continue to shoot it for many years to come.

A classic
If you're looking for an extremely versatile B&W emulsion I would highly recommend you take a look at Tri-X. It pushes like a dream and provides a lovely range of tones with a wide latitude. This film both scans and enlarges very well.

Great for Darkroom Dwellers
It's been a while since I've splashed around in a darkroom, but seeing that Tri-X is still produced has got me thinking about setting up my development gear again and doing the old magic with all its strange lighting and smells and trickling water.Anyway, Tri-X definitely makes grainy prints, but that's the beauty of it. Digital black and white just doesn't have the mystery about it that this old film has, and creating a bit of wonder is what black and white is all about.

This is the best B&W film for portraits, be they of people or be they of pets
I am a mostly digital girl, and this is the only film I use for portraits when I shoot in a film camera. I do not shoot for bells and whistles nor do I have high-end camera equipment. This is the same black and white film that used to be extremely readily available (those were days) when I was in high school, and I am so very glad that I have wonderful photos taken on it in my beloved point-and-shoot: of the kindergarteners which were in my care as a YMCA camp counselor and of my friends and (mis)adventures throughout my senior year. It is not so easy to find as it was then, so I like to get it in the multi-packs here, where the price is reasonable. I'm still using the same Old Reliable Olympus Point and Shoot, and they still come out like a dream.

Shot Tri-X 400 for two semesters
I bought a brick of this several years ago for a couple of black-and-white photography classes and was pretty pleased with it. Tri-X requires less development time than TMax, so there's less waiting around until you can get back to the fun stuff in the darkroom. It is a little grainy because of the film speed, but in this case the grain gave the finished photos a very pleasing quality that I wouldn't have had if I'd shot with some slower film.

A classic
Tri-X has been around in one form or another for a very long time. It is Kodak's most popular Black and White film, which probably says a lot right there. It's not the sharpest or finest grained film on the market, but a lot of people like it's "Look."My recommendation is to rate this film no faster than ISO/320 if you want decent shadow detail. Many prefer to rate it at 200, but that depends on what developer you're going to use.

Grainy but forgiving
This film is classic stuff. A bit grainy, but extremely forgiving of questionable exposure times and screwy processing conditions and therefore great for a darkroom knucklehead like me. Plus, it's cheap and readily available; in this color-oriented day and age, few other B&W films are either.

Versatile High Speed Black and White Film
This classic Kodak high speed black and white film still holds its own against its newer competitors because of its versatility. It is one of the few films that can be easily pushed and yet still retain much of its shadow detail. However, it isn't the best; I believe Ilford HP5 Plus is better than Tri-X for shadow detail and contrast. And of course Kodak T-MAX 400 and Ilford Delta 400 are vastly superior with regards to shadow detail and contrast. Still, one can't go wrong using this high speed black and white film; a classic that is still worth using.
