amazing, revelatory, empowering
as a survivor of rape and sexual abuse, i have read a bunch of books on the aftereffects of assault, being a survivor, et cetera, but most of the stuff out there is pretty dry and basic and i just didn't find it very helpful. this book is direct, incredibly right-on, it gives you hands on techniques for staying present in your body, it includes an amazing discussion of triggering. it also uses down to earth language and is not too self-help-y, and it acknowledges that certain terms might be alienating and medicalizing for some people.FYI: although it is targetted at female survivors of child sexual abuse, i myself am not a woman, and the sexual assault/abuse i experienced occured during my teenage years, not my childhood. i still found the book very useful. there is also a great chapter aimed at partners of survivors.

I've been waiting for someone to write a book like this
For the past eight years, I have been slowly, painstakingly discovering for myself many of the techniques that Staci Haines details in this book. As far as I am aware, I am not a survivor of child sexual abuse, but I have many of the same difficulties - lack of trust, unclear boundaries, easily triggered, difficulty being sexually present.I looked at books on recovery; they seemed only to tell me that it was OK to not have sex. I looked at TONS of books on sex and none addressed my difficulties - until The Survivor's Guide to Sex. I can say from my own experience that it's not easy to put Staci's suggestions into practice, nor do the rewards necessarily come quickly. But for some of us, this is the only way we're going to reclaim our sexuality.I highly recommend this book if you feel numb, shut-down, or angry during sex, whether or not you are a "survivor". Chances are you have some deep healing work to do, and this book is the only guide I've seen for doing it.

I have been waiting for this book for years!!
When I first found this book I was hoping it would be different, as a healing survior I have read alot of help books, and although comforting, they usually told me why I had the problems I did but didnt give me much advice on how to start living and having fun again in life, this book was amazing at that, it was what I had been looking to read since I started wanting to heal!! It would be a great book for anyone wanting good sexual information in a society that dosnt offer that much, I found it straight forward and honest and funny ..great book!! I loooved it!!:)

Product Description

Based on the author's extensive training and experience in working with abuse survivors, The Survivor's Guide to Sex offers an affirming, sex-positive approach to recovery from incest and rape. While most books on the topic broach sexuality only to reassure women that it is alright to say "no" to unwanted sex, this one encourages women to learn how to say "yes" to their own desires and on their own terms.
Points of discussion include problems common to women survivors. Haines teaches survivors to embrace their own sexual choices and preferences, learn about their own sexual response cycles, and heal through masturbation, sexual fantasy, and play. The Survivor's Guide to Sex includes resources, bibliography, and an index.

Sex-positive and daring, The Survivor's Guide to Sex will support any woman's pursuit of pleasure and confidence. In fact, its cheery outlook may startle those who have been addressing these issues in guarded terms with a therapist, or who haven't put their fears and desires into words. Haines ably discusses common negative reactions among survivors, such as withdrawal and dissociation, and suggests ways to move on. Her chapters on "Sexual Response and Anatomy" and "Masturbation and Self-Healing" may come as a revelation to women who have repressed their sexual feelings, and partners, too, will find much of interest. Some survivors of abuse may not be ready, perhaps, for the advanced course in radical sex that Haines eventually launches into, but it is still good to learn that "a suede whip will give more of a thud that spreads sensation at first; it will give more sting as it collects body oils." --Regina Marler Top to learn more

It has definitely taught my husband and i how to be closer
I picked up this book and from the first random page i opened and flipped to, i almost immediately felt a connection with this book. It goes through every imaginable situation, types of abuse, and how each one (even if not first-hand abuse, but seeing it or hearing it ..... she takes into account ALL the different abuses) affects us all in different ways. How to tell that there's a sexual problem, how to define it, how to accept it, how to talk about it to partners/friends/family if at all possible, how to identify the sexual IMPACT and how it's affected us. Then it works into reclaiming that self-worth, gaining control over automatic responses, healing wth an intimate partner, and techniques for relearning touch and to BE touched. It talks about the impact that abuse has on our views of the word Sex and what it means to Survivors. It helps you change your image of the word, and to re-learn (or learn for the first time) what it really means. You learn how to accept the past, and that...

An invaluable ingredient in my recovery
What I particularly appreciate about this book is its inclusive approach to the subject. While many books speak to heterosexual women who were victims of incest over a long period, this book speaks directly to people of all genders, sexual orientations, and the entire spectrum of sexual abuse experiences.

The BEST sexual healing book I've read
I've been on a healing journey from childhood sexual abuse for many years. I've read all the "standard" books and worked with a number of therapists. NONE of the books and NONE of the therapists has helped me heal in the area of sexual intimacy to the extent that this book has helped me. It's the first book I've read that REALLY addresses this problem, and it offers step by step suggestions to finding a healing path. I also found it very comforting to read words of encouragement from others AND THEIR PARTNERS with similar histories and problems who have made amazing progress. Until I read their stories, I never REALLY understood that my feelings and dysfunction were "normal", under the circumstances. My partner and I are so grateful Wendy Maltz for having written this book.

Using It Already
As a therapy grad student, I purchased this book because it was on the recommended list for a class I am taking on Adult Trauma Interventions. Even though the class has not yet begun, I have started Phase I from Treating Survivors of Childhood Abuse with two new complex trauma clients I'm seeing. Already I am seeing the benefits. The text is well-written, easy to understand, and comes with handouts for clients at the end of the chapters. I would recommend this book to anyone working in the counseling field.

A senistive guide that focuses on safety and healing.
Bonnie Collins and Kathryn Marsh's book Healing for Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A 12-Session Group Treatment Program, published by Whole Person Associates out of Duluth, Minnesota is a wonderful model for professionals who choose to facilitate groups for survivors of incest. Although the book is written for adult survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse, I feel it can be adapted to adolescent survivors as well. The user friendly style in which the guide is written allows for easy adaptation. The authors have thought of everything from the comfort of chairs chosen to experiential exercises to develop safety. They truly attempted to put themselves in the shoes (chairs) of the survivors they serve! Collins and Marsh start with the item survivors need most - SAFETY - an item that is taken for granted by many non-survivors! Choices are given at every turn - something that survivors may also see as very foreign. The survivor is in control of whether they...

Very well done and immediately useable for all clinicians
As a group therapist who has faciliated time limited groups for over 12 years, I highly recommend and support the work of Bonnie Collins as outlined in this important book. Her program utilizes a structured 12 session group model that addresses all aspects of the group participants. Mind, body and spirit. Compassion, skill, tremendous sensitivity are woven into this treatment model. For example, Bonnie is aware of the normal anxiety of these women discussing such issues in public and in a group setting, that she has written material available for the group members upon walking into the first group session, as a way to bind some intial expected anxiety. The approach is not solely a cognitive one--the excercises outlines and suggested are often times experiential in nature. Well thought out and easilly read. I especially liked the handouts, assessment tools, and suggested letters offered at the end of the book. A must read for anyone working with this difficult issue in a...

Good resource for Counselors of Sexual Abuse Victims
Dr. Langberg presented every dimension of sexual abuse-its mental and physical aftereffects on the victim, and how the abuse impacts one's spiritual well being by hindering the individual from coming to Christ. Dr. Langberg has been working with sexual abuse victims for nearly twenty-five years. She included one woman's graphic story of abuse, which brought tears to my eyes. I felt pain and sorrow for the little girl in the story. Anger welled up inside of me as the woman depicted an escalation of abuse as she grew older, in which her father prostituted her to other men. This woman, Meeka, was denied love, protection, and a childhood.Dr. Langberg listed several "indicators" which manifests as chronic symptoms (migraine headaches, muscular tension, TMJ, gastrointestinal problems, anger difficulties and deep grief) or "somatic effects" (though she warns that these are not proof that abuse had actually happened) (88). Emotional aftereffects of sexual abuse include a...

Product Description

This powerful book deals with the issue of how Christians, especially those called to counsel, can help survivors of sexual abuse find healing and hope. From 20 years of experience, the author demonstrates how counselors can walk alongside people deeply wounded by sexual abuse as they face the truth about who they are, who their abuser was, and who God is as the Savior and Redeemer of all life. Counseling Survivors of Sexual Abuse issues a strong call to the church at large to walk with survivors through the long dark nights of their healing.

Diane Mandt Langberg, Ph.D., has been a licensed psychologist in private practice for nearly 25 years. She is a speaker at local and national conferences for clergy, women, couples, students, and professionals. Dr. Langberg writes the counselor column in Today's Christian Woman magazine. Her books include Feeling Good, Feeling Bad and Counsel for Pastor's Wives. Diane lives in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, with her husband and two teenage sons. Top to learn more

Molestation harms children, whether or not the molester is paying for that privilege, like in child sex trafficking. The rule adults should follow is not to engage in sexual activity with children, which is more of a law than a rule, really. org may remove any comment at her/his/its discretion. One, even if the parents of the molested child asked for privacy, that doesn’t mean the school stays mum until the media gets wind of it. They could have continued to keep the child’s identity secret while sending out a circular or even posting up... The suggestions ranged from banning male workers in the school to having police verification of every worker(at the time there was construction activity going on at the school, so the parents had presumed that one of them must be responsible for... Almost all the parents present assumed it was one of the construction workers ‘from God knows where’, and asked for their credentials to be verified and so on. Just because someone is poor or uneducated or a manual labourer does not automatically... The school hadn’t raised the issue until some parents and the media got wind of it, because they said that the parents of the little girl had for it to be kept quiet. The school also suggested that parents reinforce the same at home, and then, with incredibly bad timing and foot in mouth syndrome, said that it had over the years uncovered many cases of sexual abuse of children, most of which took place in or... In this case, it was as likely for an older student or a teacher to be a molester as a manual worker   – we need eyes and ears on everyone, not just people we think are ‘not of the same class’. Three, getting police verification doesn’t mean much in a country where most crimes are not solved, where issues like child abuse are not taken to the police or reported and therefore will not show up on someone’s record. Just because one incident happened to a girl in a bathroom does not mean that there is now a precedent and that all molesters will know to target that place and that sex.

Right up until a child molester resolves torturing internal concerns the controlling drive to molest will continue, regardless of whether or not they are chemically castrated. It can be analogized to Californias new chemical-castration law and the proposed single-handcuff law for second-offense child molesters. As these, making use of Depo-Provera on child molesters is akin to making use of penicillin for rapists: the drug has no relation to the concerns involved and is thus ineffective. Now, persons twice convicted of child molestation will be inflicted with injections of Depo-Provera, a hormone that impedes intercourse drive and fertility. Underneath this scheme, twice-convicted child molesters would be compelled to wear a single handcuff for existence upon their release from prison. Child molesters do not have difficulties with their libido, they have difficulties with conduct management, mental fragility and substance abuse. There is no analogy with child molesters and Depo-Provera, which has an inhibiting impact on each libido and fertility. The Womens Coalition has introduced that it is currently functioning on “phase two” of the chemical-castration law – the single-handcuff law.
